Shipwrecks Off Tory…

Oilean Thoraighs' spectacular cliff scenery is complemented by a rich and varied history, which is related to the Islanders distinctive Gaelic. Shipwrecks and tales of violent storms have also been drawn into its folklore.
The Gunboat "Wasp" struck the isolated rock "An Fedan" under the lighthouse on Tory Island in1884. Fifty of the crew were lost. Some are buried at a small cemetery near the lighthouse.
This is just one of the many wrecks that lies submerged in the deep waters around Tory and its neighbouring Islands - Inishbofin, Inisdooney and Inisbeg.
Designed by George Haplin, Tory Lighthouse was built between 1828 and 1832 with the light was first seen on 1st August 1832.
Measuring 30m in height with 2.3m thick walls at the base, it was converted from catoptric to dioptric in 1862.  The Lighthouse was manned until 1990 when it became automatic.
